Mirena Coil Insertion

The insertion of a Mirena intrauterine system (IUS) provides long‑term contraception while also helping to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding in some women. It is placed within the uterine cavity to release a low dose of hormone locally, providing effective, reversible birth control.

What’s Included

This procedure includes a pre‑insertion consultation to discuss your suitability, explanation of the benefits and potential side effects, the insertion itself by a specialist clinician, and post‑procedure advice. Follow‑up appointments may be arranged if needed to check positioning or address concerns.

Procedure Details

During the insertion appointment, the clinician will gently place the Mirena device through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. A local anaesthetic can be used to improve comfort if appropriate. The procedure is brief and performed in a clinical setting. You may experience mild cramps or discomfort immediately afterwards, and you will be advised on what symptoms are normal and when to seek help.
