The insertion of a Mirena intrauterine system (IUS) provides long‑term contraception while also helping to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding in some women. It is placed within the uterine cavity to release a low dose of hormone locally, providing effective, reversible birth control.

During the insertion appointment, the clinician will gently place the Mirena device through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. A local anaesthetic can be used to improve comfort if appropriate.
